I'm submitting this to the Jackle redesign contest at the NiGHTS forums. The idea was borrowed--with permission!--from Avis the Crow. This is the basic concept:
In JoD, Wizeman says to NiGHTS that he can take NiGHTS's body and replace only his consciousness--only his spirit. We inferred by the way he said it--with such confidence--that he has performed the act before the game. Avis gave a deep LE GASP, and pointed out that perhaps Jackle was crazy because Wizeman kept replacing his consciousness without properly removing the ones who inhabited Jackle previously. In this way, the conflicting urges and voices would be very present in Jackle's mind, but he would have no idea where said urges and voices are coming from. So he goes insane.
